Your Wedding Party and their Wedding Day Duties

All of the members of your wedding party have a role to play in the events of the big day. Make sure everyone knows theirs so that everything goes as planned.

The members of the wedding party may vary from wedding to wedding. Yours may include any combination of the following: Best Man, Maid of Honour, bridesmaids, groomsmen, flowergirl, pageboy or ringbearer, and ushers. Whether you have all of these attendants or only some of them, it’s a good idea to make sure everyone knows their duties on the day of the wedding!

The Best Man.

This role is generally played by a brother or very close friend of the groom. The Best Man will stand beside the groom during the ceremony, and is considered to be the leader of the groomsmen. On the day of the wedding, he will be responsible for making sure all of the men and boys in the party are dressed appropriately and ready for the ceremony. He is also generally responsible for keeping track of the rings until it is time for them to be carried up the aisle. He will be expected to make a speech at the reception, and may also act as Master of Ceremonies.

The Maid of Honour and bridesmaids.

Usually a sister or best friend of the bride, the Maid of Honour is often deeply involved in the wedding plans. On the day of the wedding, she will be expected to help the bride with all of her preparations along with the other bridesmaids. She and the other women will help the bride to dress, aid with hair and cosmetics and help her get to the ceremony. She is also usually in charge of making sure all of the other female attendants are dressed and ready, and ensuring everyone has their flowers and is in position and ready to go at ceremony time. At the reception, she will usually make a speech in honour of the bride, and will continue to assist the bride with all of her needs.

The Flowergirl and Pageboy.

Generally young children under the age of ten, these roles are some of the most adorable in the wedding party. Their duties are not terribly involved due to their age. As part of the wedding procession, the flowergirl generally walks ahead of the bride and throws flower petals on the aisle. The pageboy, also often called a ringbearer, usually carries the rings (sometimes fake rings to ensure safety) up the aisle. Either of these children may also be called upon to help with the bride’s train or other errands. As they are young children, they may need extra coaching to ensure they know what is expected of them.

The Ushers.

Usually chosen from family members such as cousins, or from close friends, they are responsible to helping guests as they arrive. They will provide each guest with a program and help them to locate their seats, based on which side (bride or groom) they are associated with, as well as their closeness to the families.

Every member of the wedding party has an important role to play on the big day. Making sure everyone from the Best Man to the pageboy knows exactly what is expected of them will help the day to go smoothly and take a lot of the stress and pressure off of the bride and groom to make sure they can enjoy their special day.
